BREAKING: Pope Francis Has Died at Age 88

Vatican City – April 21, 2025

The world is mourning the passing of a transformative figure in modern religious history. Pope Francis, the 266th pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church and its first Jesuit and Latin American leader, has died at the age of 88. The Vatican confirmed that the Holy Father passed away peacefully at 7:35 AM on Easter Monday at his residence in Casa Santa Marta.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina, in 1936, Pope Francis made history upon his election in 2013. He was the first pope from the Americas, the first from the Southern Hemisphere, and the first Jesuit to ascend to the papacy. From the outset, his papacy was marked by humility, compassion, and a deep concern for the most vulnerable.

During his 12-year pontificate, Pope Francis became an outspoken advocate on issues such as climate change, economic inequality, immigration, and interfaith unity. His landmark encyclical Laudato si’ called for urgent action to protect the planet, framing environmental stewardship as a moral responsibility. He also worked tirelessly to reform the Vatican bureaucracy, increase transparency, and foster a more inclusive Church.

His global impact extended beyond the Church’s walls. Pope Francis met with leaders of other faiths, reached out to marginalized communities, and consistently emphasized mercy over judgment. He championed the dignity of the poor and criticized what he called a “throwaway culture” that neglected both people and the planet.

Now, as the world reflects on his life and legacy, tributes pour in from all corners of the globe — from political leaders, religious figures, and ordinary faithful who saw in him a shepherd who truly walked with his flock.

The Vatican has begun the traditional novemdiales — nine days of mourning — and preparations are underway for his funeral Mass in St. Peter’s Basilica. The College of Cardinals will soon convene in conclave to elect his successor.

Pope Francis leaves behind a Church forever changed by his vision, courage, and compassion.
May he rest in eternal peace.
