Giants Fans Get Surprise Boost as Hunter Pence Joins Netflix Broadcast for Opening Night
Baseball is about to start its 2026 season in a way fans have never seen before.
On Wednesday, March 25, the San Francisco Giants will face the New York Yankees in the first regular-season game of the year—an Opening Night showdown broadcast exclusively on Netflix.

The streaming giant’s involvement already had fans buzzing. But when the broadcast team was finally revealed, Giants fans received news that instantly made the unusual setup feel a lot more familiar.
Hunter Pence is coming back to the booth.
The beloved former Giants star—known as much for his passion and personality as his clutch postseason heroics—will serve as one of the color commentators during the game. For many fans, the announcement was a welcome relief.
Pence will share the broadcast booth with Yankees legend CC Sabathia, creating an intriguing pairing of former All-Star players representing both teams.
Handling play-by-play duties will be veteran broadcaster Matt Vasgersian, a familiar voice for baseball fans through his long career with MLB Network and other national broadcasts.
But Netflix isn’t stopping with just the game broadcast.
The company is planning a full-scale production around the historic Opening Night event.
Elle Duncan will lead the pregame and postgame coverage, joined by two iconic baseball names: Albert Pujols and Anthony Rizzo. Meanwhile, longtime MLB Network personality Lauren Shehadi will report from the field during the game.
And because this is Netflix, the broadcast may include a few surprises.
Comedian Bert Kreischer is expected to appear as a special guest during the show—an unpredictable addition that could bring a completely different energy to baseball’s season-opening spectacle.
But the biggest mystery of the night might involve a Giants legend.
Netflix has teased a “Special Guest” analyst slot in its promotional graphics, fueling speculation that Barry Bonds himself could appear during the broadcast.
If the rumor proves true, it would be a fitting tribute.
To celebrate Bonds’ legendary 73-home-run season in 2001, Netflix plans to place 73 kayaks in McCovey Cove, creating a striking visual tribute outside Oracle Park.
For Giants fans, the idea of seeing Bonds return to the spotlight—alongside Pence—would transform Opening Night into something far bigger than a normal season opener.
Still, the broadcast arrangement has sparked mixed reactions.
Some Giants fans remain frustrated that the game will air exclusively on Netflix, meaning viewers without a subscription may struggle to watch the team’s first game of the season.
Others simply miss the familiar voices that have defined Giants baseball for decades: Duane Kuiper and Mike Krukow, the legendary broadcast duo fans are accustomed to hearing on Opening Day.
Fortunately, that nostalgia won’t have to wait long.
Two days later, on Friday, March 27, the Giants will play their first home day game, returning coverage to the traditional local broadcast crew.
But before that happens, baseball will begin the 2026 season in a completely new way.
The matchup itself already carries plenty of intrigue.
It will mark Tony Vitello’s first regular-season game as a major league manager, while Yankees superstar Aaron Judge returns to Northern California, adding another layer of storylines to the opening series.
Now, with Netflix’s ambitious broadcast plans, a legendary Giants player in the booth, and possibly the Home Run King himself appearing on screen…
Opening Night suddenly feels like much more than just the first game of the year.
It might be one of the most unique season openers baseball has ever seen.
